Turns out divorce isn't just an option for couples.
Influencer Suellen Carey sparked curiosity across the globe last year when she married herself in a practice known as sologamy. A year later she revealed that she is done with the practice and is divorcing herself.
"I realised that self-analysis and reflection is essential," Suellen told The Mirror in an interview published Aug. 30. "It's crucial to know when to end a cycle. Even commitment to oneself can have its challenges, such as dealing with the expectation of being perfect for yourself all the time."
The 36-year-old—who was born in Brazil but now lives in London—shared she even went through couple's therapy with herself to try and make the solo marriage last, but admitted there were times when she ultimately felt lonely in her relationship.
"I realised I was putting a lot of pressure on myself and that sometimes left me exhausted," she explained. "I understood that even in a marriage with ourselves, it's important to accept our imperfections."
After 10 sessions with a therapist to try and work through her problems in her solo marriage, she concluded that divorce was her only option. Still, Suellen—who also does events as a Mariah Carey impersonator—doesn't regret her sologamy decision.
"I realised that my sologamous marriage was a process of healing and self-discovery," she continued. "But I also understood that personal growth can lead us in different directions."
And as she looks ahead to her future, Suellen is open to experiencing a monogamous relationship.
"I've decided that now is the time to open my heart to new possibilities,' she added, "including the chance to find a partner."
In terms of her marriage, the influencer explained in September 2023 that it was something she "discovered and understood what I wanted" over time.
"Today I value and love myself, I married myself here in London," she wrote on Instagram at the time. "This celebration is important because I learned to prioritize my well-being and mental health."
She added, "This is one of the happiest days of my life, I am grateful and very happy. I hope to inspire other people here too."
